Stéphane SOLIOT
Stéphane Soliot is the cooperage’s stave sorting manager.
THE EYE OF THE COOPER: METICULOUS CONTROL
Stéphane, 46, had no initial connection to the world of wine. He discovered cooperage at the age of 19 while working as a metalworker. What started as an opportunity became a vocation, and 27 years later, he has mastered this craft with remarkable precision. Today, he plays a vital role in sorting staves — the pieces of oak used to make barrels and casks.
What is the most difficult part of his job? “You have to identify the grain of the wood and detect the slightest defects, such as knots, cross-grains, or risks of leakage or breakage, and select only the best pieces.” “Each new batch of staves is different, so it requires a lot of concentration,” he says with a smile. “It’s not something you can learn in two days!”
A GUARANTEE OF QUALITY
Rigour, attention to detail and patience are his daily allies. His job requires sustained attention and genuine expertise in wood, which he has acquired over many years. During peak periods, Stéphane can sort up to 18 pallets, or almost 1,800 staves, per day! This essential behind-the-scenes work guarantees the exceptional quality of our barrels.
In an industry where the quality of wood can vary, his experience sets a real benchmark. He is a passionate but discreet craftsman who ensures that only the best staves are used in the manufacture of barrels. This high standard ultimately contributes to the creation of tomorrow’s great wines.
It’s a fascinating and indispensable profession. Well done, Stéphane!
