CADUS Commitments to the planet and forests

“We want to support human adventures that make sense, because they resonate with our vision of the profession of cooper. For example, we’ve been involved in forest preservation with the Naudet nurseries for many years, a project we are further developing in 2025 by taking particular care in selecting replanting projects“

Benjamin Le Berre, Chairman, Tonnellerie Cadus

— THE 8 CADUS COMMITMENTS

COMMITMENT #1: working exclusively with french oak

(Cadus barrels are PEFC-certified)

COMMITMENT #2: preserving forests and managing resources sustainably

• Since 2015, Tonnellerie Cadus has been leading
the “1 Barrel, 1 Tree” program: for each barrel delivered,
Cadus undertakes to plant an oak tree in a French forest,
with the help of Naudet nurseries.

COMMITMENT #3: encouraging the local economy and local producers

• In 2024, Tonnellerie Cadus created a new 100% local
and eco-responsible barrel named “47.07” (a name inspired
by the cooperage’s GPS coordinates), made from parts
sourced exclusively from Burgundy suppliers, as close as
possible to the cooperage. With this new project,
Cadus guarantees local sourcing, the traceability of barrels
and a reduced carbon footprint.

COMMITMENT #4: reducing our environmental impact

• Cadus uses several energy-saving and recycling techniques to respect
the environment (environmentally-friendly wood-fired boiler, cool roofing, biodiversity preserving around the production site eg. planting hedges…).

COMMITMENT #5: helping to decarbonize the wine industry.

• The cooperage is working towards achieving its first carbon
footprint in 2026. To this end, it is actively involved
alongside the winegrowers and professionals
of the Burgundy wine industry through the decarbonization
plan launched by the BIVB (Bureau Interprofessionnel
des Vins de Bourgogne), “Bourgogne Neutrality 2035”,
which aims for carbon neutrality by 2035.

COMMITMENT #6: innovate with natural methods and save energy

• Since 2022, Cadus has reduced its packaging by 80%, either
by eliminating it for short distances, or by using “Géochanvre”
hemp canvas packaging, 100% compostable
and biodegradable.

• Another innovation: Cadus offers the modern,
100% natural PUR® firing complement, the result of its R&D
program, which enables faster integration into the ageing
process. The SENSORIEL® range benefits from this know-how.

COMMITMENT #7: passing on our know-how and preserving human values

• Every year, the workshop welcomes a new
apprentice cooper for a two-year training program
to become a master cooper, in partnership with the CFA
de Beaune.

COMMITMENT #8: supporting the wine and wood
industries through sponsorship

• Through several patronage and skills-sharing partnerships, Cadus cooperage is committed to supporting cultural and scientific projects linked to its identity and history: Domaine du Château de Chambord, the “Climats”, terroirs of Burgundy, the Cité des Climats and Burgundy wines…

Chambord, guardian of a French tradition

Cadus supports and maintains traditional French cooperage, that is why the partnership with the National Estate of Chambord then seemed obvious in 2018. From this mutual trust, our collaboration took the form of a skills-sharing partnership.

Chambord has been on the first list of historical monuments since 1840 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. With 5,440 hectares / 13,44 acres and 32 kilometers / 20 miles of surrounding wall, the National Estate of Chambord is the largest enclosed forest park in Europe.

The production of staves is thus carried out near Chambord. 24 months of drying in the open air in the park of Chambord and under the favorable climate of the Loire Valley are then necessary for the seasoning of these exceptional rough staves. The barrels are made and toasted by the Tonnellerie Cadus.
